With 59 hotels spread across the UK—13 in Scotland, 2 in Wales, and 44 in England—Atlas Hotels Group is a key player in the hospitality industry. But beyond offering great stays, they’re on a mission to tackle a big challenge: reducing their carbon footprint. Given that hospitality accounts for around 1% of global carbon emissions, Atlas Hotels is making sustainability a core focus, measuring and minimising their impact every step of the way.
Atlas Hotels began working with Consultus International in 2020 to take a deeper dive into their sustainability efforts. Since then, Consultus has been helping them stay on top of their environmental impact by producing an annual Streamlined Energy and Carbon Report (SECR). Introduced in 2019, SECR regulations require large UK businesses to report on their energy use and carbon emissions—but for Atlas Hotels, it’s more than just a compliance exercise. The report provides a clear snapshot of their annual emissions, highlighting key drivers and helping shape smarter, more sustainable decisions.
Atlas Hotels works closely with the Consultus International Group to pull together the data needed for their SECR report. A key part of this process is Consultus’ Bill Validation service, which allows Atlas Hotels to track total gas and electricity usage across all sites—crucial figures that fed into the 2023 report.
Beyond energy use, Atlas Hotels also reports on Scope 1 and Scope 2 transport emissions, as well as other fuel sources like propane. With seamless data sharing from their team, the process ran smoothly, ensuring a comprehensive and accurate report.
In addition to reporting, Atlas Hotels actively implements energy-saving initiatives. A standout project in 2023 was the widespread installation of LED lighting across their sites—an upgrade that led to a significant 1.77MWh reduction in annual energy consumption.
The finalised 2023 SECR report revealed a 7.7% increase in carbon emissions, largely due to higher Scope 1 transport emissions and increased gas and electricity usage. However, this rise wasn’t without reason—it was directly linked to a significant boost in business, with an additional 204,023 rooms sold compared to the previous year.
When Atlas Hotels first partnered with Consultus in 2020, their total reported emissions stood at 6,200 TCO2e. By 2023, this had risen by 15.12%—but the bigger picture tells a different story.
Back in 2020, emissions data covered just 48 sites. By 2023, that number had grown to 58, meaning the rise in emissions is relatively small when compared to the expansion of the portfolio. This highlights the group’s continued focus on managing sustainability effectively, even as their footprint grows.
“Consultus were great when it came to assisting with our year-end emissions reporting, very responsive to queries and changes.” – Tom Beynon, Atlas Hotel Group.
