Having originally been appointed in 2020, Consultus Sustainability has been delivering a range of services to leading real estate and hospitality group London and Regional (L+R) Hotels for five years, with the project to reach net zero ongoing.
The hospitality industry faces complex challenges on the road to net zero. As climate change accelerates and guests become more discerning, operators must put talk into action, embedding sustainability at the heart of operations.
It was on this basis that L+R Hotels appointed Consultus Sustainability to develop a comprehensive strategy that spans technology, culture and collaboration, to help decarbonise its international portfolio of 115 properties across nine countries, from select-service hotels to some of the finest five-start resorts in the world.
Consultus Sustainability was originally contracted by L+R Hotels to enhance utility purchasing and manage its property portfolio from an energy perspective. Commercial director, Bradley Wilson, and his team adopted a unique, pioneering, flexible energy trading strategy that has returned market-leading results for over five years, including navigating L+R through the energy crisis unscathed.
The third facet of our service is a bespoke, robust Net Zero Pathway. We began by bringing key stakeholders together for workshops and audits to build a strategy that includes appropriate targets, solutions and implementation projects.
As hospitality experts, we often see certain buildings within the portfolio that can be targeted to generate quick wins. Our baseline assessment revealed just that – with immediate improvements in energy efficiency and renewable sourcing tackled first.
We then developed a tailored roadmap to reduce emissions as much as possible, starting with operational changes, before addressing more structural challenges as part of a phased approach.
The next phase of the project will see our team focus on two pillars: energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption. This will include controlling access to data across the portfolio, analysing insights of patterns in energy usage, exploring new smart technologies for onsite generation, assessing and recommending energy efficiency schemes, cultural engagement programmes, designing and implementing on-site projects, and most crucially, reporting on the impact year-on-year.
One example of these on-site generation projects is the trialling and scaling of new renewable technologies; whereby self-powered lodges were fitted with solar PV systems. Another example involves exploring AI-driven energy management and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to optimise consumption and reduce waste.
Our initial focus for L+R has been to optimise existing systems and procurement strategies, which can reduce emissions by 15-20% without major capital investments and deliver immediate impact. Through these measures, L+R Hotels has already reduced over 500 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
The second piece of the puzzle for L+R Hotels was to build a culture of sustainability within its workforce, which helps to embed sustainable thinking into everyday operations. These champions feed into a dedicated Sustainability Committee, where stakeholders can align to share best practice and evaluate activity. Staff training is also central to this approach – from housekeeping to senior management – and systems have been implemented to encourage guests to think about the daily choices that can have a hugely sustainable impact, such as towel cleaning.
The goal is to ensure every team member, guest and person within the L+R Hotels ecosystem feels empowered to make a difference.
Angelo Noto, group director of engineering and sustainability at L+R Hotels, is the architect of L+R’s sustainability journey, and works closely with Consultus Sustainability towards shared goals.
He said: “Sustainability is no longer a buzzword. It’s a fundamental part of our business strategy and our responsibility to guests, staff and the wider community. The team at Consultus Sustainability has helped us focus on actionable change, measurable results, and building a legacy of responsible hospitality. For us, the concept of the triple bottom line – people, planet and profit – has become a guiding principle.
“Collaboration with industry experts, consultants and technology providers is absolutely essential to how we operate at L+R Hotels, especially when it comes to delivering meaningful and measurable change. These collaborations extend our internal capabilities and help ensure we’re not only meeting industry standards but often exceeding them. What makes these partnerships especially valuable is the shared commitment to outcomes. It’s not about ticking boxes, it’s about aligning our strategies with real-world results.”
